Rare Siberian Tigers Starved to Death This Winter in a Chinese Zoo - AOL News

Thanks to the delightful GlamKitty for sending me this article.

This is just too horrifying for words. Every time I think my thoughts on Chinese business, health and humanitarian practice can't possibly sink any lower, they let me down further. Some have suggested these magnificent and gravely endangered animals were likely starved so that the zoo could sell their pelts and parts for traditional Chinese medicinal preparations for rheumatism. Evidently as opposed to the high cost of feeding the tigers, zookeepers who are typically underpaid, can take the carcasses and make money themselves off of every square inch of dead tiger.

(Edited to add source for info on pelt sales- thanks for the catch Meli)
